How to properly organize and clean out your closet?

My closet isn't an ordinary closet. I stuff old clothes and junk like books and stuff in there. Where do I put all the stuff I don't want? How do I organize? Thanks.

  1. the goodwill is always happy to take stuff like that for needy families that could put it to good use. pack the stuff you don't want and take it to the nearest goodwill or salvation army. no reason to just let it sit there or throw it away.
  2. take everything out then go through your clothes and get a trash bag for things you dont want ..... the stuff you don't want can go to a charity or good will or something. next, hang up all your clothes that you want to keep. dont forget to dust a little X) prioritize and REALLY THINK what do you REALLY wear and want to keep. don't be a pack rat! just get rid of stuff and then put in the things you want/need
  3. if you are in dire need of it and its effecting your way of life you can hire a professional organizer to help you http://www.leahfisch.com/ they do wonders
  4. A good rule of thumb is....if you have not used it in 2 years...get rid of it. Give it away... rummage it and make some cash... but box it up and get it out of the house... You won't even miss it.
  5. Go throught everything because you might not see everything between the cracks, what I usually do is look everywhen in my house then have a yardsale things that don't sell I drop it of the Salvation Army so I won't keep it afterwards. with the shoes I kept I bought shoe boxes made of plastic that sell at Big Lots! for just a dollar a box so my shoes stay out of spiderweds, nets and not get any scratches from throwing them back in forward on top on closet shelf. Store Jeans under closet or in drawers.
  6. Start from the bottom and then work your way up. Get some really big trash bags so that you can fill them with all the stuff you don't want and either donate the junk that is sellable to a thrift store. Or, you can have a yard sale yourself. Make for sure what you have in your closet still fits you and is still in style. Go thru each item and try them on including shoes. Clothes are still good if they need mending. Take them to an alteration shop if need be. If you find the clothes are still what you want, hang them up all in the same direction (front of all garments facing in one direction). When you hang your clothes either hang them together as outfits or put all the shirts together and skirts together ect. If you have purses, go thru them and chose the ones you want to keep. Go to Bed, Bath & Beyond and buy a hanging purse organizer and shoe holder. You can also go to Lowes and buy shelves so you can have more room for your folded clothing. The only things that should be in your closet is the things that you wear.
  7. get three boxes one for stuff to donate one for stuff to keep and one for trash it works wonders
  8. if its a real mess it may seem overwhelming, so do a little at a time...put some music on and maybe tackle the top shelves first then when you have another block of free time, do another shelf. Once you see your progress, you'll keep going and maybe (just maybe) you will start to enjoy it.....GOOD LUCK
