How do I clean and disinfect my closet concrete floor?

Last week the toilet overflowed and seeped into my carpeted closet. I noticed a foul, musty odor 6 days later, removed the carpet and padding and used Pine-sol cleaner on the floor. The smell came back. How do I remove the odors economically? and what type of paint would you recommend using. I really don't want to use harsh chemicals. I hope the products I use won't cause fumes, because I will have to sleep in the bedroom next to the closet. Thanks.

  1. Bleach and hot water. Bleach does come in different scents now but this is the ONLY product that will clean AND disinfect and remove the odor for good. Leave a window opened while cleaning and waiting for floor to dry.
  2. Bleach and hot water to the rescue. Also may want to put some baking soda (on a plate or leave in the box) in the closet afterwards as this will help elimate lingering odors
  3. The best way to clean and disinfect is a solution I use all the time. Mix half a box of bicarbonate of soda with vinegar into a thick mixture and then add the juice of a lemon, half a lemon will do, and then scrub it on. Mop it clean with soapy water, you can use a bit of dish soap, and that should get it clean, disinfect it and remove the odor. It's economical and works wonders. You can use this mixture on any tile, linoleum, PVC or concrete floor or walls.
