Changing bathroom faucet after tiling project...?

I recently had someone tile my shower surround. I am replacing my bathroom faucet and have run into a problem the existing 1/2" pipe coming out of the wall for the spout is too short to accomodate the spout that came with the faucet I purchased by approximately 1/2" or so. Is there any kind of adapter/connector I can purchase that would make up the difference? I went to a hardware store today and I was sold a universal spout, but none of the configurations will work around this problem. The person at the hardware store said I might have to change the old pipe out, but this is the least desirable way to do it, since the tile is already in place and I don't want to risk damaging it.

  1. The pipe coming out of the wall would actually be very simple to replace, all it would take is un-screwing it. The pipe is just threaded inside of the valve. Its called a nipple and all you would need to do is take a pipe wrench and loosen it and take it off. Then take the old one to the hardware store and get your needed size.
  2. They do sell extensions that start at 1/2 inch. You might have to go to several places to find one in brass. From experience, try that first. Next option is to get access to the pipes from the back. The spout will cover up by more than an inch any damage that will be caused by replacing the spout pipe. Most of the time this is the best option. You might just remove the old pipe, and pray the new one goes in easy.
